Publisher Activision’s big sci-fi shooter franchise Destiny won’t get a sequel released a year after the original, but that doesn’t mean the company won’t have a way to squeeze a lot more money from fans.
The next expansion, which is reportedly called The Taken King, will launch Sept. 15 for $40, according to leaked promotional material on Kotaku. That is two-thirds the cost of a full new release. That price is emblematic of how Activision and developer Bungie are planning to keep the game’s revenues at a high enough level to justify missing a year with a retail sequel. Activision is one of the publishers that established the annual-release cycle with franchises like Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero, Call of Duty, and Skylanders — but it is obviously looking for an alternative to that rapid release schedule when it comes to Destiny.
We’ve reached out to Activision and Bungie for comment on this rumor, and we’ll update this story with any new information. Although, we will likely learn all the details of Destiny’s next expansion, which we know is coming, at next week’s Electronic Entertainment Expo trade show. Sony has had a close relationship with Activision when it comes to Destiny, and it’s likely the PlayStation company will drop some tidbits during its media event on Monday evening.
While we wait, however, we can touch on some other rumors for the next add-on. That $40 price tag will of course have to add some serious content to convince diehard fans and lapsed Destiny players to drop the cash.
Here’s what the rumor claims:
- New raid starring Crota’s father, Oryx.
- New strikes.
- New competitive maps.
- New subclasses for the three main classes.
- Electrical storm (arc) elemental ability for Warlocks.
- Gravity bow (void) for Hunters.
- Flaming hammer (solar) for Titans.
